I am no stranger to game cameras. I have used them since 2006 and have owned Moultrie, Scout Guard, Bushnell and now the Leupold Brands.
The short version of this review is simply these cameras do not preform as advertised. If you read reviews from various sources, you will find that they are either rated excellent or very poor. There is no in between.
Being a 25 year Leupold customer I have always considered their products to be top notch. Therefore when my wife gave me 3 of these cameras and a controller for my birthday, I was delighted. When I got the camera's I opended the package and began testing them on my property. Camera number 1 worked well for 3 or 4 pictures then would not pick up any subject in the field of view. I finally quit working alltogether. Camera number 2, worked fine but had a problem detecting a subject more that about 15 feet away. The advertised claim is 45-90 feet.
I really felt like the problem was me and placed a call to Leupold Customer Service. After only a 30 second wait, the Rep came on the line and we went through the entire setup procedure several times. I spent over 3 hours on the phone with him before he delclaired the first two camers defective. He then had me open the 3rd camera and we determined that that camera would take a picture at 45 feet but there was no subject in it. Leupold paid for the cameras to be shipped back to them and sent me three new ones and a new controller.
The first camera I opened from the new shipment had the same sensing problem as one of the others, it only worked part of the time.
I placed the camera on a tree directly above another brand camera in front of a deer feeder and waited a week. In reviewing the pictures Brand X Camera had taken 198 pictures, mostly of deer. The Leupold Camera took only 48 pictures, all of deer. I have not opened any of the other cameras in the shipment they are going on an online auction. After 4 defective cameras I am giving up on them.I am sure I did everything according to the directions, these cameras are just poorly manfactured. Great engineering and good features, but very poor execution in manfacturing.
I'm giving these cameras 2 stars because of the great customer service by Leupold and the picture quality is almost 3D like at 10MP Resolution. However they are almost useless if they won't detect the subject properly.
1/15/2012 Update
I wanted to update everyone on these cameras. I gave these camera another chance during the last 2 months of Deer Season. I now have nine of them I bought from 6 different places. To get 9 working cameras I had to send 6 of them back to Leupold. The ones I have now seem to work OK so I am increasing my rating to 3 stars from 2. The dual sensor technology does work if you get a camera that is working properly. A couple pointers I can give you if you decide to go with these: 1. Be prepared to test them throughly and send them back to Leupold if they don't work properly. 2. Aim is everything on these cameras especially in the DST Mode. The sensing unit sends out a very narrow beam and if it not aimed correctly, you will get poor results. In addition, hang these cameras lower than than you normally would another brand. About 2.5 to 3 feet is best for deer (can't comment on elk.) Be especially careful if the target area is lower than the camera. Just because you can see the subject in the controller viewfinder doesn't mean the sensor will trigger the camera. 3. These cameras absolutely will not work properly unless you use the expensive Lithium batteries so be prepaired to spend some money on batteries. The good news is the Lithium batteries last a long time. 4.These cameras need to settle on the tree for a couple of hours before they really start working properly. Hang it and forget it for a while (maybe a day). Then test it. 5. I used Bushnell and Scoutguard Cameras previously and you have to forget everything you know about them, this is an entirely different product that operates differently.
One day Leupold will get the bugs out of these and they will be really great Trail Cameras.
12/4/2012 Update
I have had these cameras a year now. They seem to be working OK and the batteries lasted a full 12 months. Here is a tip for you: If you start to experience dark or black pictures at night and good or red tint pictures during the day, the batteries are failing. I had one camera that even though the battery meter on the controller showed a full charge the infrared would not fire at night and the camera just would not take a picture. I tested the voltage on the battery pack and the unit was producing 12.98 volts, you would think this was plenty for a 12 volt system and during the day it is, but not at night. The camera is designed to stop taking night pictures (with infrared flash)to preserve the battery for daytime pictures. This is covered in the manual but not with clarity. The solution is to change the batteries. Eight new batteries produce 14.5 volts and my camera started taking night pictures again. Bottom line don't rely on the built in battery strength meter on the controller. If you can, invest in a cheap multimeter. I paid about $7.00 for mine and it's worth it. I am sure this is the source for many complaints about this camera due to low batteries or trying to use Alklaine batteries in it. As I mentioned above, you have got to use the expensive Lithium batteries for this unit to be effective. Akaline or (weak Lithium) batteries will produce inconsistant results and make you think the camera is faulty.

i have owned several different brands of game cameras ranging from 100 to 400 dollars moultrie was my favorite till i gave leupold a shot which is the fastest way to go to drop by the camera in just a few seconds your pictures are downloaded onto the controller and on to the next camera no more swapping out memory cards or standing in front of it veiwing the pictures and the very best quality pictures i have ever seen so much detail in the HD pictures by far the best camera i have ever owned

I got a special deal on one from Cabelas during a veterans day sale, --- its being returned for an exchange as we speak. At first there was no night time pictures at all - only me setting up the camera and taking it down, daytime pictures were ok of deer if they were inside of 20 ft. This camera suppose to have a range of up to 90 on a narrow 10 dgree angle and 45 ft on 45 degree angles. I tried the basic settings of Best Pictures and Custom Pictures and unless the subject was under 20 ft it would take a daytime picture, and I finally got a few night time pictures under 10 feet. After googling up "leupold RCX2 problems" I finally figgured out that it wasn't me, the settings others used conformed to mine. I believe the "PIR" sensor was faulty as many others also seemed to have this problem, along with host of other problems others were having. I believe that there is a severe problem in quality control with this product from China and Leupold needs to kick some arse to maintain their fine reputation for top of the line sportsmen products --- the products poor reputation also dropped its price from near $350 to around $200 in just a short few months.
UPDATE 12/6/2012
My brother was in Cabelas yesterday and all of Leupolds game cameras was in the Bargain Cave. He inquired why so many and Cabelas Rep said that Leupold is discontinuing the line as it has had severe quality control problems. So Buyer beware
